Even though Troika+Ltd has only been in the film and TV industry for a short amount of time we have experienced the challenges and obstacles that appear to hold fledgling companies and creative minds to ransom in getting their ideas off the ground.
In a little under two years, we managed to get further along the path of completed work and broadcast deals than many Independent crews have done in 5 years or more! This was done through doing things differently. Running parallel routes. One the one hand playing the industry game of seeking funding, of “learning” in established ways. On the other hand doing whatever was needed through private and personal investment, grass roots level contact making and skills development. The many challenging hours, techniques and skills needed to succeed as we have are what brought us to the idea, and need to create our Troika+Ltd Student Graduate Programme.
Our programme strives to seek out film school students and graduates who are showing both a potential above others AND quickly becoming disillusioned with being told things HAVE to be done a certain way. Troika+Ltd has the skills to highlight these individuals and also to show them other, parallel ways of learning and developing.
We have successfully got filmmakers to realise their ideas by showing them techniques they cannot learn in film-school, by giving them credited and paid work on real shoots and more importantly TV credits to add to their CV from the get go, and by hooking them up with experienced filmmakers in the community who already work and respect the Troika+Ltd methods.
CASE STUDY: Sally Eldin-Dalziel
Troika+Ltd company Director Sally Eldin-Dalziel first came to the attention of Ricardo and Lee through the Graduate Programme. Sally was a film student who not only showed the potential of being a major female filmmaker in the UK, but is also the creator of some amazing, original project concepts that caught the eyes of Troika+Ltd directors.
Whilst still being told what CANNOT be done by those “in the know”, she had first hand experience of working on a Troika+Ltd shoot for an upcoming project. Troika+Ltd hooked her up and developed her standing with both actors, fellow filmmaking crews and writers to begin developing her own brilliant scripts into what they deserve to be…fully fledged, shootable, marketable productions. This could NOT have been done through standard industry methods (she simply did not have the “experience” of the industry) and is testament to the Troika+Ltd Film Graduate Programme ideology – to show new rising talent that there is another way to make their dream projects come true. Underground independent networking, unique ambition fuelled production techniques and an alternative view of budget restraints all getting those projects to fruition.
